Initially, I was thinking if I should go since it's a Buddhist organisation and I'm a Christian. But I decided to go because her faith meant a lot to her. How can I know her fully if I don't understand her faith? She has attended activities organised by my church and I thought it would be fair for me to attend activities organised by them too. I don't want non believers to think that just because we are Christians, we won't be open. Besides, volunteering is great! A meaningful activity to spend my time on.
So today, I went for the nursing home visit and my group was doing handicraft. Since it's Mother's Day tomorrow, we wanted to do a handmade mother's day card for them. While doing so, we also had the opportunity to talk to the elderly and it was so nice just listening to their stories. One of the elderlies I talked to is Dorothy and I learnt that she is 98 years old! She got married during the war and she made her own dress and bridesmaids dress. She showed us pictures and it was so beautiful :') She also said she got 2 more years till she turn 100 and will be able to meet the Queen. She was also happy to receive the Mother's Day card we made for her.
Another one is Earle, an Irish man. It was a bit awkward cause we were doing mother's day card for everyone and he is a man so we wrote Happy Day instead of Happy Mother's Day hahaha.
The last one is Anna, she wasn't as happy and enthusiastic as the first few elderly I met but she is lovely. I could definitely see that she is a shoe person cause she was talking about another elderly's shoes and another volunteer's shoes haha.
Anyway, I really hope all the elderly stay happy and healthy. And I do hope I will be able to see them again :')
After visiting the nursing home, we went back to wrap up and have lunch. I observed as they worshipped Buddha. And it was a new experience for me! It was my first time observing how buddhist worship. Lunch was vegetarian since it is what they encourage so that's a first too!
Reflecting on today's experience, I wondered what is the difference between our religion? For most religions, they teach you to DO good things to save yourself. But for christianity, it is different. IT IS DONE. Jesus paid the price for us at the cross. And it is not by our own deeds but what Jesus has done for us that we are saved and would have eternal life. And because of God's love, we are compelled to love others.
There are many people living without Jesus. But EVERYBODY NEEDS JESUS, maybe they just don't know it yet. So that's what we are called to do. To introduce Jesus into their lives, so they can lead a purpose driven life.
Romans 10:14 "How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them?"
So pray for those who have yet to know God! It's the best gift ever and it's free! Pray they will be willing to receive this gift.
And pray for ourselves, that God will go before us as we share His love and that He will equip us to do more for Him!
